Message from Mrs. Aydt

It is both pleasure and privilege to work as a media specialist.  I began working as a children’s librarian in Chicago in the 80s, but consider Dommerich the ideal place to foster lifelong curiosity and a love of reading!

Since coming to Dommerich in 2012, I have had the honor of sharing our innovative  programs and services at both state and national conferences.  In addition, the DES Media Center helps students consistently earn awards related to creative writing, oral storytelling and video production.  It also encourages high-level competition in local spelling bees and chess tournaments.

Our school library boasts over 30,000 titles!  Students themselves help to develop this collection by acting as special area purchasing consultants and joining our popular PTA Birthday Book Club.

At the heart of the Dommerich media program are the 8 class visits each school day, including the 5th grade television news crew that works in our state-of-the-art digital studio every morning.

Our eager visitors actively practice digital literacy skills and explore a variety of authors, genres and topics in our school library.  Students in the primary grades enjoy storytelling and puppetry, while also participating in fact-finding, creative dramatics and other literature-based activities.  In grades 3 through 5, students participate in our Sunshine State reading program, which challenges them to read engaging titles and demonstrate comprehension through fun, oral quizzes. With some of the highest statistics in our school district, the Dommerich Media Center checks out close to 3,000 books per month!

Collection Development Procedures

Orange County Public Schools' collection development procedures are documented on School Board Policy IJL - Library Materials Selection and Adoption. Library media materials, whether purchased or donated, are selected by a school district employee who holds a valid educational media specialist certificate. Library Catalog

Orange County Public Schools uses Follett Destiny’s Library Management System to catalog all materials maintained in the school library media center. The Destiny Library Catalog can be accessed by hovering over the Media Center tab on this website and selecting the “Destiny Library Catalog” option from the dropdown menu. The public has access to search any school’s library catalog for available titles. The brief video below demonstrates how to search a school’s library catalog.
