Academics

Welcome to Dommerich Elementary School

We are committed to the academic success of all students.  We believe that all students can learn and consistently attend to their needs to keep them moving forward in order for them to achieve their highest potential.  Our dedicated teachers plan, deliver, and assess instruction on the Florida State Standards, utilizing the Orange County Public Schools suggested scope and sequence, literacy plan, and adopted curriculum.  This plan ensures that all students are exposed to grade level, instructional level, and independent level text within informational and literary genres.

The Florida Standards provide the foundation for instruction in OCPS. Curriculum, Instruction, and Digital Learning provides training, ongoing professional development, digital resources, and documents, based on these standards, to guide teaching and learning. These areas of support ensure consistency of curriculum and instructional strategies to address the Superintendent's goal of maintaining an intense focus on student achievement.

The core subject areas are reading, math, writing, language arts, social studies, and science. We are a highly motivated and cooperative learning school where individuals are taught to share, help, encourage, be kind, and support each other's efforts to achieve and be productive learners.

Each child participates in art, music, and physical education classes. Our media center is always available for students to check out books, research, or participate in literacy programs.

Students attend art class once a week. They gain experience using a variety of art media and learn techniques to create art skillfully. The design elements of color, value, line, shape, form, space and texture are explored. Along with artistic skill, students develop an understanding of different styles of art, artists and art from different cultures. Each year, students will build on the knowledge and skills acquired in the previous years to produce more advanced works of art.

  • Music

    Music Teacher:  Cynthia Krulick
    Cynthia.Krulick@ocps.net

Mrs. Krulick is a classically trained pianist and has played for many musical theater productions, children’s choirs and other performances in the community. She has a BA in piano from Jacksonville University and a Masters of Music Ed from University of Massachusetts (Lowell). She has taught elementary music in OCPS for 18 years.

In music we sing, play instruments, move to the music and perform folk dances and singing games experienced by children for decades. While students are playing games they gain coordination, practice social skills, and learn to use their singing voice.  We sing using solfege syllables (do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do) and practice rhythm with rhymes, icons, pictures and notecards. These are building blocks to reading and writing music.

Intermediate students (grades 3 – 5) continue to work with the instrument that everybody owns and carries with them wherever they go – their singing voice! In addition, you will often hear drum ensembles, recorder groups, ukuleles and a variety of percussion instruments in the music room. We study elements of music, including rhythm, melody, form, style, dynamics and timbre. Music reading progresses each year as students practice reading music on the staff.

Making music also means creating music. Sometimes they improvise a melody, or work with a partner to create a movement, or work with a group to find a fun way to do a rhythm.  Every time we improvise, perform,  and collaborate with others we are gaining skills that will stay with us for a lifetime.

Dommerich students in 4th and 5th grade can join after school ensembles, including Chorus, Musical Theater, and DES Combo. These groups deepen their music skills as they practice together in preparation for concerts. Past performances include concerts at DES, Maitland Season of Light, and Orlando Magic Games.

    Learn About Our Orchestra Program

Students in 4th and 5th grade have an opportunity to enroll in our Orchestra course.  In this beginning orchestra course, students learn proper hand position, bowing styles, tone, quality, aural skills, intonation, instrument technique, music reading, listening skills, ensemble playing, and teamwork.  Within this curriculum, students can expect to perform a varied repertoire of music.  Students will also learn appropriate rehearsal and concert etiquette.

You will be required to rent an instrument for this course.  If you are not financially able to do so, an instrument will be provided to you.   Rental information and instrument sizing will occur during the first week of classes. The average cost for instrument rental is $25.00 per month.

Please note: Enrollment is limited to 25 students.  If a greater number sign up, 25 students will be selected by lottery.   You will be notified if your child is selected.  (5th graders who played in 4th grade are guaranteed a spot once the application is turned in.)
